The best time to protect your phone is before anything happens. Start by writing down the IMEI numbers for every cellular line on the device. Store them in a password manager, a secure cloud note or your purchase documentation. If the phone is lost, you may not be able to access the settings screen anymore.
Turn on the platform recovery tools: Find My iPhone for Apple devices and Find My Device for Android. Confirm that location services, device locking and remote erase options are active. Also make sure the account email and recovery phone number are up to date.
Use a strong screen lock and enable biometric unlock only as a convenience, not as the only barrier. A stolen phone with no passcode exposes photos, email, banking apps, messages and identity documents much faster than most people expect.
Keep software updated because security patches close real attack paths. Avoid sideloading apps from unknown sources, do not reuse your main email password and turn on two-factor authentication for accounts that can locate, wipe or unlock your phone.
Finally, prepare a small recovery checklist: carrier phone number, insurance details, IMEI numbers, account recovery links and emergency contact instructions. That list turns a stressful loss into a sequence of clear actions.
